How to tie a Hakama?
Have you just bought your first Hakama or don’t you know how to tie up your Hakama? No problem, we will explain you how to do this best on this page!
There are several ways to tie your Hakama, although there are two ways that are used the most. About 90% of all the Aikidoka you see will use this way:
- Put your front and longest Hakama bands over your judo band.
- Take the front Hakama bands and tie them around your body twice, until you end up at the front again. Tie the Hakama bands up and hide the leftover bands behind your Hakama.
- Put the Koshita on the top of your judo band and place the two back and shortest bands over your judo band. By doing this, you avoid your Kosita slipping during your training.
- Bring the short Hakama bands to the front and make a knot. There is a possibility to hide these two shorter bands in your Hakama as well, but some schools leave them out.

Apart from trying to tie your Hakama using our steps or the Seido video, we recommend you asking your fellow Aikidoka or your teacher. In Aikido, transporting knowledge from other Aikidoka in your dojo is essential in progressing. This includes tying up your Hakama and folding your Hakama. Do you want to learn how to fold your Hakama as well? Check our page about how to fold an Aikido Hakama!
