Christian Tissier 8th dan Aikido

After a number of years, it has finally happened: Christian Tissier has reached his 8th dan Aikido! Christian Tissier is now the first non-Japanese* with this high dan grade: Aikido history certainly has been written today!

Sunday, January 10, he has received his certificate from the current Doshu (Moriteru Ueshiba) during the Kagami Biraki in Tokyo:

Christian Tissier 8th dan Aikido

The Kagami Biraki (“opening the mirror”) is a typical Japanese tradition in which a barrel of sake is opened. This is an Aikido tradition as well, during which high dan-grade promotions (from 5th dan) are announced.

Here is the entire list of Aikidoka who promoted to a new dan grade:
Kagami Biraki 7th 6th dan
Kagami Biraki 6th and 5th dan

Everybody on the list: congratulations on your promotions!

* There are two Hawaiian teachers who have also achieved 8th dan Aikido, but they have Japanese roots and are therefore not seen as “foreigner.” André Nocquet has also achieved 8th dan Aikido at some point, but this was before the current/official graduation system.
